Lary Speakman was born in Colorado and began his study of the martial arts in his teens with the Golden Gloves and Tae Kwon Do. When he graduated from high school, he began study of Thai Kick Boxing (Muay Thai). Graduating from the University of Colorado in 1971, he attended graduate school at the University of Illinois and began study of Aikido. At the time he was convinced there had to be some Martial Art which was better and more complete than those he had previously studied, an Art that just didn't end, that was effective and combat based. He briefly studied Judo and felt perhaps its precursor, Ju Jutsu, might be the Martial Art to satisfy his quest. This decision led him to Japan and Satoshi Goda-Sensei, a Japanese master of Ju Jutsu, in the mid 1970's and the study of Yoshin Ryu Ju Jutsu. He studied under Goda-Sensei until Sensei's death in 1991. Goda-Sensei promoted Mr. Speakman to 7th degree.
